What is Catnip?

Just like humans, cats love a treat. Catnip is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family. Catnip contains a compound called nepetalactone, which is responsible for the unique reactions seen in cats.

How Does Catnip Affect Cats?

When cats come into contact with catnip, whether by sniffing, licking, or rolling in it, the nepetalactone binds to receptors in their nasal tissue, which then stimulates sensory neurons in the brain. This stimulation leads to a range of behaviors, including sniffing, licking, chewing, rubbing, and rolling.

Why Do Cats Love Catnip?

Not all cats are affected by catnip, as sensitivity to nepetalactone is hereditary. Approximately 50-70% of cats exhibit a strong response to catnip, while others may show no reaction at all.  For those cats that do react, the effects are typically short-lived, lasting around 10-15 minutes.

Is Catnip Safe for Cats?

Catnip is non-addictive and completely safe for cats to enjoy in moderation. It is a natural herb that provides mental stimulation and enrichment for your feline companion. It is recommended to use catnip sparingly to prevent habituation. A good way to give your cats catnip is through catnip toys.
